What Exactly Is Bixpy Canada and What Problem Does It Solve?

Canada has more freshwater lake area than any other country on earth. We have rivers that stretch across entire provinces, coastlines on three oceans, and a paddling culture that goes back centuries. And yet, for decades, there was no good way to add electric power to the small boats that Canadians love most. If you owned a kayak, a canoe, or a paddleboard, your options were your own two arms or a heavy, clunky trolling motor that was never designed for your watercraft.
Here at Bixpy Canada, we exist to change that. But to truly understand what exactly is Bixpy and what problem does it solve, you need to hear how the whole thing started.
Stranded Off the Coast With No Wind and No Good Options
In the summer of 2014, our founder Houman Nikmanesh was sailing a Hobie Island sailboat off the coast of San Diego. The wind died, the tide started pulling out, and he found himself about eight kilometres from shore with no way to get home except pedalling against the current until his legs gave out. He made it back eventually, exhausted and frustrated, and immediately started searching for a portable electric motor he could add to the little sailboat.
What he found was nothing. The market had trolling motors built for large fishing boats and a scattering of homemade DIY solutions posted on internet forums. Nothing was designed for personal watercraft. Nothing was lightweight, portable, or affordable. The gap was enormous.
So Houman did what any determined founder would do. He moved his cars out of the garage, brought in a PhD engineer, and started building a solution from scratch. That garage became the birthplace of an entirely new product category.
Engineering That Borrows From Turbines and Jet Engines
Most companies entering the marine motor space would have simply shrunk a traditional propeller setup. We took a fundamentally different approach. Instead of chasing more thrust through bigger props and heavier batteries, we looked at how hydroelectric dam turbines and jet engines move fluid efficiently. We modified the motor architecture, fine-tuned the impeller pitch, added airfoiling and flared ducting, and created the Bixpy Canada PowerShroud Motor.
The PowerShroud is an optimized impeller jet system. Water enters through an intake and exits through a nozzle at high velocity, producing clean, efficient thrust. This design outperforms conventional propellers at the low speeds personal watercraft actually travel, which is typically five to eight kilometres per hour. That efficiency is what lets us keep the motor remarkably small and light while still delivering serious performance on the water.
The jet-drive design has practical advantages that matter for Canadian paddlers specifically. There is no exposed propeller blade to tangle in the weeds that choke so many of our inland lakes. No fouling on submerged grass or stray fishing line. And no spinning blade near swimmers, pets, or wildlife, which is especially important on the family-friendly lakes where so many Canadians spend their summers.
Built to Handle Every Type of Canadian Water
When you paddle in Canada, you do not pick one kind of water and stick with it. You might kayak a freshwater lake in Ontario on Saturday, paddle a brackish river mouth in New Brunswick the following week, and take your board into the salt water off Vancouver Island the week after that. We designed our products to handle all of it without hesitation.
The motor shaft uses a corrosion-resistant stainless steel that outlasts the industry standard SS316. Exposed bolts are SS316 with titanium coating. Heat sinks are aircraft-grade anodized aluminium. The main plastic housings use specialised ABS and ABS/polycarbonate with anti-UV formulations to handle long summer days on the water. And in high-impact areas, we use a proprietary glass-filled nylon formula treated for both saltwater and UV exposure.
Canadian seasons push gear hard. Spring ice-out conditions, midsummer heat, autumn cold snaps, salt spray on the coasts, tannic water in the Shield country: Bixpy Canada products are built to handle all of it without corroding, cracking, or breaking down.
Batteries That Were Designed for the Outdoors, Not Adapted From Car Parts
A lot of marine batteries on the market are essentially automotive batteries stuffed into a waterproof case. We started from scratch. Our outboard batteries are purpose-built for personal watercraft. They are fully waterproof, corrosion-resistant, and buoyant. If your kayak flips on a windy lake in Manitoba or a wave catches you off the Nova Scotia coast, your battery floats instead of sinking.
The slender profile fits under kayak seats, inside canoe hatches, and alongside gear in tight storage compartments. A single charge provides anywhere from a couple of hours at full throttle to more than ten hours at cruising speeds. For most Canadian paddlers, that is a full day of exploring without any worry about running out of power before you make it back to the launch.
Over a Thousand Compatible Watercraft and Growing
Once we perfected the motor and the battery, we focused on making the system work with as many boats as possible. Our WillFit Adapters now cover more than a thousand specific kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, and small watercraft. These are true plug-and-play solutions that require no drilling, no permanent modifications, and no special tools. Attach the adapter, click in the motor, connect the battery, and paddle out.
The motor itself is universal. You buy one Bixpy Canada motor and one battery, then add adapters for each watercraft you own. Your kayak, your paddleboard, and your canoe can all share the same propulsion system. Just swap the adapter and go.
The Problem We Wake Up Every Day to Solve
The problem Bixpy Canada solves is simple but it affects thousands of Canadian paddlers every season. It is the angler who cuts a fishing trip short because the paddle home against the wind is too daunting. The retired couple who used to canoe together every weekend but now stick close to shore because ten kilometres round trip is too much. The family that paddles separately because mom and the kids cannot keep up with dad's pace. The solo paddler who looks at a gorgeous chain of lakes connected by open crossings and decides it is not worth the risk without backup power.
Our motors bring those lost experiences back. They extend your range, save your energy, and give you the confidence to explore the incredible waterways that make this country special. What exactly is Bixpy and what problem does it solve? We give Canadian paddlers more time doing what they love. That is the heart of everything we do, and we are just getting started.
